Super Micro Computer shares are selling off at the moment, but major Wall Street firms are hopeful about the company's long-term prospects. Super Micro, one of the vendors that builds Nvidia-based servers, released quarterly results on Tuesday after market close. Super Micro also bumped up its fiscal 2024 revenue guidance above its previously estimated range and what analysts are expecting. But a revenue miss dragged shares of Super Micro 16% lower on Wednesday. On the other hand, Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo maintained their neutral-equivalent ratings for shares of Super Micro.

Overall, Chatterjee said that the AI cohort is trading at a 55% premium relative to the non-AI basket. While that may be the case, the top AI picks still remain attractive — including a few names outside of the chip space, he wrote. In the same note, Chatterjee released a list of his top AI stock picks. One of Chatterjee's top AI picks is PC and server manufacturer Dell . The stock "trades at one of the most inexpensive multiples relative to the AI Group despite the robust premium relative to its own historical average," he wrote.

One of the most popular artificial intelligence plays may be nearing the end of its red-hot run, according to Goldman Sachs. Super Micro Computer has grown to nearly $60 billion in market capitalization and is slated to join the S & P 500 later in March. Among his reasons for no more than a neutral opinion, Ng highlighted that Super Micro Computer currently trades in line with Nvidia on a price-to-earnings basis. Beginning next year, he said, he expects revenue growth to slow to 51% from a 61% compound annual growth rate between 2021 and 2024. Ng initiated a price target of $941 on SMCI, implying about 4% upside from Friday's close.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

He highlighted the enhanced photo capabilities on Pro models and called the new double tap feature the most notable upgrade to the Apple Watch. Many analysts expected hikes around $100 and $200 for the beefed up Pro and Pro Max iterations. Apple essentially delivered a $100 price hike on the Pro Max by doing away with the lower storage option. He noted that the hike on the Pro Max skewed to the low end of the Wall Street firm's expectation range. Most Wall Street analysts like what they're seeing from Apple , viewing the iPhone maker's better-than-expected results as a sign of resilience and its continued ability to deliver even in a tough environment. Apple rose 2% in the premarket after posting earnings that beat expectations, driven by stronger-than-expected iPhone sales. Chatterjee has an overweight rating on Apple and a price target that implies upside of 14.6%. Softening demand 'casts a cloud' Despite the company's better-than-feared results, some analysts do expect volatility ahead. UBS analyst David Vogt reiterated his buy rating on the stock but said softening demand "likely casts a cloud on the stock near term."
Goldman Sachs recommends clients buy call options on Apple and Microsoft ahead of each company's earnings reports in two weeks. For Apple, Goldman thinks the mobile app spending portion of the company will beat Wall Street expectations and service revenue will become the main force behind earnings growth. "While app spending growth has slowed, as we lap recent benefits from consumer stimulus and engagement benefits due to the pandemic he expects app spending to resume mid-teens growth in F2024." AAPL YTD mountain Apple could beat expectations in mobile app spending and boost shares as investors look toward earnings, according to Goldman Sachs. His price target of $43 implies the stock will gain 15.5% over the next year from where it closed Friday. While he forecasted infrastructure solutions group revenue should fall 14% in fiscal 2024, it should grow 4% in fiscal 2025 and beyond. Client solutions groups revenue should also fall 14% in fiscal 2024 before posting 3% growth in fiscal 2025 and 1% in fiscal 2026. The long-term financial model also remains strong with revenue growth between 3% and 4% and per-share earnings growth of at least 6%, Ng said. Ng also said the company's the price-to-earnings ratio of 7 over the next 12 months makes the stock attractive.
One stock that's bucking all macro concerns in 2023, and has been for years, is Taser maker Axon Enterprise . Axon shares are up nearly 30% this year, putting them on track for their eighth consecutive annual gain. While other smaller firms offer these products, Axon has been snatching up market share as it leverages its relationship with law enforcement. The Taser maker has a customer relationship with roughly 17,000 out 18,000 U.S. law enforcement agencies, according to a note this month from Goldman Sachs . The firm also has dedicated sales representatives for 1,200 for the largest agencies, which represent 70% of law enforcement patrol officers.
It's time to buy Axon Enterprise , Goldman Sachs said. "AXON's market leadership with TASER has resulted in deep customer relationships with state and local law enforcement (e.g., 17k of 18k US law enforcement agencies) and a highly valuable installed base of law enforcement personnel," Ng wrote to clients on Tuesday. Axon Enterprise shares are more than 33% higher this year, and outperformed with a more than 5% gain in 2022 as well. Amid growing calls for oversight of law enforcement, the analyst noted Axon should easily step in to meet greater demand for sensors such as body cameras, given its customer relationship with roughly 17,000 out 18,000 U.S. law enforcement agencies. The firm has dedicated sales representatives for 1,200 for the largest agencies representing 70% of law enforcement patrol officers, according to the note.

Apple could get a big boost from its services business, according to Goldman Sachs. Ng said investors may be incorrectly focusing on slowing product growth, which masks what he sees as an opportunity for the company to expand its services business. He said improvements in the services business, paired with product innovation and growth in the base, should offset headwinds from reduced demand for phones, tablets and Macs. "The durability of Apple's installed base and the resulting revenue growth visibility from attaching more Services and Products is what underpins the recurring revenue - or Apple-as-a-Service - opportunity." Apple's services business should see an 11% compound annual growth rate through at least the end of fiscal 2026, Ng said, resulting in $117 billion in revenue compared with $78 billion in fiscal 2022.
The growth of Apple's services revenue in recent years has fueled our enduring investment mantra: Own Apple, don't trade it. Apple shares rose 270.5% between Feb. 6, 2018 and Friday's close, far outpacing the S & P 500's roughly 50% advance over that period. Over the 12 months in which Goldman had a sell on Apple shares, the stock climbed about 89% . In particular, we appreciate the analyst's conviction in the company's services growth, which includes the App Store and Apple Music. As that base of active device users expands, the number of people who will pay for additional Apple services grows alongside it.
